You know it's time to get a new computer when you're terrified of starting up the one you own, incase this is the time it doesn't start at all. It's like having a technological Great-Grandmother in the house, some time soon, it's just not going to wake up at all. So I'm off to get a new a new computer today, and my decision is easy - anything but an Apple.
Before I get into any Hipster/Cult/Nerd bashing, I'll just say this - almost every Apple product I've owned has malfunctioned. Speakers have blown, buttons have stopped working. My current Nano has been reduced to a humble Shuffle since the "wheel" stopped "wheeling". (Good Lord that was a lame techno-sentence if ever there was one. Sort of how Sci-fi writers in the 1950's would write about the Future. Except with Hover-bikes.)
So to put it plainly, I think they're pretty lousy in terms of quality.
And I'll let Futurama do the talking when it comes to the Cult:
What irks me more than anything is that to question Apple's quality and status is frowned upon. People defend as if it were a friend, or even family member. It's a piece of branding genius that a company which is essentially monopolistic, has a record of breaking down editors doors and of inducing their factory workers to suicide has the cultural cachet of "Funky Uncle".
