Film Review: Underworld: Awakening

I'll preface this review with two points; one, that I liked all of the Underworld films and two, that I walked out of the latest, Underworld:Awakening.

Even I had paid for a ticket I doubt I would have survived till the end. Perhaps it was that particular cinemas fault but I found the sheer volume of the film overwhelming. Or perhaps it's the fact that the loud, hugely derivative and screech-filled action sections were so unrelenting. In keeping with the worst of the latest Hollywood Blockbusters ( "blockbusters" in the most literal sense of the term only) the film is one long chase sequence. The story is incomprehensible. Dialogue is brief - perhaps mercifully, since no amount of good looks and raven-oil can disguise dialogue so recycled as to be the equivalent of spoken-word musak.

Not only is it abrasively loud, it's also relentlessly mirthless. It's been a long time since I've seen so many ridiculous features (vampires vs werewolves vs humans vs vampire-werewolf hybrids) , sets that look recycled from Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, and a terminally awful actress (Kate Beckinsale; whose career defining feature may end up being "leather clad")  culminate in such an unpleasant 2 and whatever hours.
