Books; Twilight.

Okay this isn't going to be a big diss on the book, since I'm about a decade behind the curve and it's all been said a squillion times over. I read Twilight because it's sold millions of copies, and while I'm fairly sure a hunk of those were sold purely because it's the thing to do, a few million must have sold because people found genuine pleasure in reading it. Aside from the celebrity fawning and water cooler conversations (apparently the latest movie was topic du month for the accounts girls at my Mum's work), I wanted to know why the book was so popular.
It was everything I expected and less. There is no plot. The climax comes literally from nowhere and is more contrived than a Mills and Boons. On a side note, the romance in a Mills and Boons is much more satisfying, and the descriptions of the hunks far more vivid and crotch-heavy.

Having said that, Bella wasn't quite as simpering or as blank as I expected. Though it must be said - HOW CLUMSY CAN ONE PERSON BE!? Also, is it just me or did she slip into ye olde speak often? As in she used words befitting a heroine from a 19th century novel, and not a frequently floor bound clutz?

But to return to why people read it, I can only guess it's the hypnotic prose. It says absolutely nothing in a calming way, like the literary version of Valium, or the way freezing to death feels like falling asleep...kind of.
